Aegis Eclipse Standalone Ship Gameplay Guide

The Aegis Eclipse is a single-seat stealth bomber built for Star Citizen players who want quiet approach gameplay, heavy torpedo strikes, and one of the more focused anti-large-ship roles in the game. Designed by Aegis Dynamics, the Eclipse is not a cargo ship, daily driver, dogfighter, or general-purpose heavy fighter. It is a dedicated stealth strike platform made to approach carefully, launch its torpedoes, and leave before the fight turns against it.

Official RSI material describes the Eclipse as a bomber designed to “get in and strike before it’s even spotted,” with a stealth-bomber focus, 1 crew, 0 cargo, and a compact but wide profile at 20.5m length and 36.6m beam. The Eclipse Q&A also makes its role clear: it carries three Size 9 torpedoes, is not designed to dogfight, and is meant to approach silently, fire its payload, and leave.

The Eclipse is the bomber you choose when you want stealth and Size 9 torpedo strike capability, not cargo utility or normal fighter flexibility.

Build Your Aegis Stealth Bomber Fleet with the Eclipse

The Eclipse is one of the more direct Aegis choices for players who want a focused, high-impact strike role. If you are looking to acquire this stealth bomber, you can explore our available choices in the Star Citizen Ships and Vehicles Collection.

For product pages, exact torpedo behavior, stealth detection, signature tuning, weapon loadout, and flight performance should be treated as current gameplay-reference information rather than permanent final values.

What Makes the Eclipse Valuable?

The Eclipse is valuable because it gives one pilot access to a focused stealth-strike role. Most single-seat fighters rely on guns, missiles, agility, or durability. The Eclipse does something different: it carries heavy torpedo ordnance on an specialized stealth airframe.

Its main selling point is not broad flexibility—it is pure specialization. RSI’s Q&A notes that the Eclipse punches above its weight class because of its ordnance and stealth equipment, allowing it to destroy large ships or cause serious damage to capital assets when utilized correctly.

The Eclipse is not the ship you buy to win every fight. It is the ship you buy to decide one important strike before the enemy fully reacts.

That is the key buyer message. It is not a normal heavy fighter or a standard combat replacement. It is a stealth bomber for pilots who enjoy planning, timing, signature control, and dropping high-value targets.

Stealth Bomber Gameplay Role

The Eclipse’s main role is stealth strike gameplay. It works best when the pilot approaches carefully, manages emissions, picks a large or valuable target, fires heavy torpedoes at the optimal moment, and slips away instead of staying to trade fire.

In practical gameplay, the Eclipse fits several roles:

Gameplay Use Why the Eclipse Fits
Anti-large-ship strikes Size 9 torpedoes are engineered specifically for larger, slower, or shielded targets.
Stealth attack runs Hull geometry and stealth-class items support low-signature radar approaches.
High-value target pressure A single hidden Eclipse forces large target configurations to respect the torpedo threat.
Fleet ambush support Works perfectly when a group can distract, disable, or expose the target's shield faces.
Solo bomber gameplay One pilot can completely operate the ship and deliver a devastating high-yield payload.
Tactical PvE bombing Highly useful against mission targets where torpedoes can lock and connect reliably.

The Eclipse should not be described as a daily fighter. It is better positioned as a highly specialized single-seat stealth torpedo bomber.

Size 9 Torpedo Identity

The Eclipse’s defining feature is its payload of three Size 9 torpedoes. RSI’s ordnance hardpoint guides list the Eclipse with 3× S9 torpedoes, while the Retaliator carries 6× S9 and capital ships use even larger military classes.

This layout makes the Eclipse highly focused. Its torpedoes are the mission. Once they are spent, the ship loses most of its tactical reason to stay in an active engagement area.

The Eclipse is built around three limited torpedo shots, so the pilot should think like an ambush striker, not a brawler.

Torpedo mechanics should always be handled with clear expectations. Torpedoes are slower and less agile than traditional missiles, but deliver much stronger explosive payloads tailored against larger, less mobile targets. This means the Eclipse is not ideal for chasing nimble light fighters with its primary ordnance.

Stealth and Signature Gameplay

Stealth is the core survival mechanism of the Eclipse. Mechanics in Star Citizen focus on making the hull harder to detect via long-range radars and scanners. The Eclipse was built from the ground up around stealth, utilizing specialized hull lines and low-emission components to keep its radar profile down.

The Eclipse survives best by staying hidden, striking first, and leaving quickly — not by trading fire.

Managing expectations here is key: stealth does not mean permanent invisible gameplay. Advanced scanning platforms can still potentially detect an Eclipse under the right conditions and ranges, meaning pilot skill and signature management remain critical.

Combat Feel and Limitations

The Eclipse is fundamentally not a dogfighter. It is not designed for close-range maneuvering, its larger torpedoes require longer lock windows on smaller ships, and the airframe lacks the agility of conventional fighters.

The Eclipse is dangerous before the fight starts; it becomes weaker if the fight turns into a close-range dogfight.

An Eclipse pilot needs patience. Success relies on approach angle, emission control, proper target selection, lock-range timing, and pre-planned exit paths rather than rushing into an engagement loop.

Solo Gameplay

The Eclipse is fully solo-operated, making it highly accessible but demanding to use cleanly. There is no turret gunner, onboard engineer, or co-pilot seat. One pilot commands everything.

A practical Eclipse pilot focuses on several operational points:

Pilot Focus Gameplay Meaning
Signature management Keep emissions suppressed to prevent early radar warnings.
Approach route Enter from angles that maximize target locking time before visual detection.
Target selection Prioritize large, slow, or distracted ships over small interceptors.
Torpedo timing Fire only within clean lock parameters to avoid wasting the limited payload.
Exit planning Disengage immediately after payload release instead of lingering.
Patch awareness Keep track of shifting ordnance and stealth balance updates.

A practical Eclipse run should feel like a planned strike, not a normal fighter mission. The pilot chooses the target before committing, approaches from a quieter angle, manages signatures, waits for a usable lock window, fires only when the torpedo has a real chance to matter, and leaves before escorts or point-defense systems can turn the fight around. The Eclipse should not waste its Size 9 torpedoes on small agile ships unless the situation is unusually favorable. Once the torpedoes are gone, the ship still has backup guns, but most of its combat value has already been spent. In real use, the Eclipse rewards patience, target selection, and exit planning more than direct aggression.

The Eclipse is best for solo players who like strategic planning and precision strikes more than constant close-quarters gun combat.

Cargo and Utility Expectations

The Eclipse features a strict 0 SCU cargo capacity. It should never be categorized as a delivery platform, box hauler, or general-purpose utility ship.

The Eclipse is a bomber only. It is not for hauling, box missions, vehicle transport, medical support, or general utility gameplay.

Aegis Eclipse vs Vanguard Harbinger

The Eclipse and Vanguard Harbinger both carry torpedo ordnance, but they target completely separate combat roles:

Ship Best For Main Difference
Aegis Eclipse Stealth torpedo bombing Carries 3× larger Size 9 torpedoes and focuses on silent strike delivery.
Vanguard Harbinger Heavy fighter-bomber gameplay Carries smaller Size 5 torpedoes but offers deep armor and extended gunfighting persistence.
Choose the Eclipse if you want stealth and massive torpedo payload delivery. Choose the Harbinger if you want a more flexible, multi-crew capable heavy fighter-bomber.

Eclipse vs Retaliator

Both platforms wield heavy Size 9 torpedo assets, but they cater to entirely different crew workflows:

Ship Best For Main Difference
Aegis Eclipse Solo stealth bombing 1 pilot, 3× S9 torpedoes, compact low-observable profile.
Aegis Retaliator Multi-crew torpedo bombing Larger chassis, 6× S9 torpedo payload, and heavy turret coverage requiring crew support.
The Eclipse is the ultimate solo stealth bomber. The Retaliator is the larger, sustained multi-crew torpedo platform.

Eclipse vs Other Stealth Hulls

While sharing signature reduction technology, the Eclipse stands alone in its primary mission focus:

  • Aegis Sabre: A stealth medium fighter built for traditional dogfighting engagements; the Eclipse is built for heavy anti-large bombing runs.
  • Hornet Ghost: A localized stealth combat modification for general fighter loops.
  • Aegis Raven: Focuses strictly on electronic warfare and system disruption rather than physical damage.

Explore Eclipse Upgrade Paths

If you prefer to transition toward this stealth strike asset from an existing ship configuration, you can view our Star Citizen Eclipse CCU Upgrades to plan your path.

Eclipse vs Other Star Citizen Combat Ships

Ship Fleet Option Primary Core Role Compared with Eclipse
Vanguard Harbinger Heavy Fighter-Bomber More flexible after firing its torpedoes. Eclipse has stronger stealth and larger S9 strike identity.
Aegis Retaliator Heavy Torpedo Bomber More torpedoes and multi-crew workflow. Eclipse is easier for solo stealth bombing.
Anvil Gladiator Carrier-Style Torpedo Bomber Smaller torpedo bomber identity. Eclipse is stealthier and carries much larger torpedoes.
Ares Ion / Inferno Anti-Large Fighter Uses massive heavy guns instead of torpedoes. Eclipse is strictly ambush-focused.
Aegis Sabre Stealth Fighter Better for normal stealth fighter dogfighting. Eclipse is a dedicated single-purpose bomber.
Anvil F8C Lightning Heavy Fighter Superior for direct brawling and gun combat. Eclipse is better for stealth torpedo strikes.
Vanguard Warden Long-Range Heavy Fighter Better all-round durable heavy fighter. Eclipse is far more specialized.
RSI Polaris Corvette / Torpedo Capital Much larger fleet ship with stronger sustained capital-torpedo roles. Eclipse is a single-seat stealth attacker.

Torpedo Risk and Target Selection

The Eclipse is powerful, but its torpedoes require smart deployment. They can be difficult to use effectively in active dogfights due to long lock-on requirements against highly mobile frames.

Ideal engagement targets typically include:

  • Large sub-capital targets: Excellent fit, especially when target shields or defensive screens are occupied.
  • Slow industrial/mining ships: Highly vulnerable to properly managed stealth approaches.
  • Grouped fleet actions: Perfect when escorts are distracted, leaving high-value assets exposed.
The Eclipse is most useful when the pilot chooses the right moment, especially when a fleet creates the opening.

Eclipse Strengths and Limitations

Strategic Strengths Operational Limitations
3× Size 9 torpedoes give it immense anti-large-ship strike value. Only three main shots before its primary offensive role is spent.
Stealth-focused hull and components support low-observable approach loops. Stealth minimizes detection ranges but does not mean total invisibility.
Single-seat operation makes it exceptionally easy to deploy alone. No defensive turrets, engineering support, or multi-crew backup.
Clear hit-and-run gameplay identity with iconic visual design. Not engineered to survive or win sustained close-range dogfights.
Can threaten and damage targets far larger than itself. 0 SCU cargo capacity; zero utility for hauling or non-combat loops.

Who Should Buy the Aegis Eclipse?

The Eclipse is best for players who want a specialized stealth bomber with heavy torpedo strike capability. It is especially suitable for solo strike pilots, Aegis fans, signature-management players, fleet ambush groups, anti-large-ship specialists, and players who already own practical daily ships and now want a focused combat tool.

Players who want normal fighter combat should choose the Sabre, F8C Lightning, or Vanguard Warden. Players who want a more flexible, armored bomber should look toward the Harbinger, and those seeking multi-crew operations should choose the Retaliator. But for single-seat stealth torpedo bombing, the Aegis Eclipse remains a premier selection.

Eclipse FAQ

Is the Eclipse worth buying in Star Citizen?

The Eclipse is worth buying if you want a single-seat stealth bomber with Size 9 torpedoes and a focused anti-large-ship role. It is not ideal if you want cargo, daily utility, dogfighting, or a flexible all-round combat ship.

Is the Eclipse Flight Ready?

Yes. RSI studio reporting around Alpha 3.2 described the Eclipse as flight-ready, and it has long been treated as a fully flyable ship in the live game environment.

What is the main role of the Eclipse?

The Eclipse’s main role is stealth bombing. It is engineered to get in and strike before it is spotted, utilizing low-signature mechanics and heavy torpedoes.

How many crew does the Eclipse need?

The Eclipse is a single-seat ship configured for 1 pilot. It does not utilize a turret gunner, co-pilot, or active crew support.

How much cargo does the Eclipse have?

The Eclipse has a strict 0 SCU cargo rating. It should not be purchased for hauling, delivery missions, trade, or general utility gameplay.

What torpedoes does the Eclipse carry?

The Eclipse carries 3× Size 9 torpedoes internally, putting it in the same heavy ordnance delivery class as the larger Retaliator.

Is the Eclipse good against capital ships?

The Eclipse can threaten large and capital-class targets, but success depends on stealth approach, timing, shield statuses, and hit location. It should be treated as high-impact strategic pressure rather than a guaranteed solo capital killer.

Is the Eclipse good for dogfighting?

No. The Eclipse is not designed to be a dogfighter. It lacks the agility and structural toughness to handle sustained turning fights against agile light interceptors.

Is the Eclipse better than the Vanguard Harbinger?

The Eclipse is superior for stealth bombing and larger Size 9 torpedo strikes. The Harbinger is better if you want a more flexible heavy fighter-bomber that can keep brawling naturally after its torpedoes are expended.

Should I choose the Eclipse or Vanguard Harbinger?

Choose the Eclipse if you want a single-seat stealth bomber with larger Size 9 torpedoes, quiet approach gameplay, and a focused hit-and-run strike role. Choose the Vanguard Harbinger if you want a more flexible heavy fighter-bomber with smaller torpedoes, Vanguard durability, and better combat value after its ordnance is used.

Is the Eclipse better than the Retaliator?

The Eclipse is better for solo stealth bombing runs. The Retaliator is better for sustained multi-crew operations because it carries double the Size 9 torpedo payload.

Is the Eclipse better than the Sabre?

They serve entirely different roles. The Sabre is a stealth medium fighter built for traditional dogfighting. The Eclipse is a stealth bomber built for large target torpedo strikes.

Can the Eclipse carry cargo instead of torpedoes?

No. The internal volume is specialized. There are no provisions for swappable bays, cargo retrofitting, or alternate modular conversions.

Can the Eclipse attack ground targets?

Yes, provided a valid target lock can be achieved. It can deploy its torpedo assets against compatible air or ground lock signatures.

Is the Vanguard Eclipse good for solo players?

Yes, but only for players who want a specialist role. The Eclipse is fully solo-operated, but it is not a general daily ship. Solo pilots should buy it for stealth bombing, not for flexible combat or utility.

Is the Vanguard Eclipse good for PvE?

Yes, the Eclipse can be useful for PvE when the target type supports torpedo gameplay. It is most useful against larger or slower targets and weaker when forced to handle small agile enemies.

Is the Vanguard Eclipse good for PvP?

The Eclipse can be dangerous in PvP if used carefully, especially in ambush or fleet situations. However, its value depends heavily on stealth tuning, torpedo behavior, target defenses, and pilot timing. It should not be sold as a guaranteed PvP meta ship.

Does the Eclipse have good long-term value?

Yes, the Eclipse has useful long-term value for players who want stealth bombing and anti-large-ship strike gameplay. Its role is very clear: approach quietly, fire Size 9 torpedoes, and leave. Its main limitation is that it is highly specialized and offers almost no utility outside that role.
