Aegis Vanguard Hoplite Standalone Ship Gameplay Guide

The Aegis Vanguard Hoplite is a long-range squad dropship built for Star Citizen players who want Vanguard durability, a compact troop-transport role, and a ship that can insert a small strike team while still fighting like a capable Aegis combat platform. It is not a cargo ship, torpedo bomber, stealth dropship, or large-scale troop carrier. The Hoplite is the Vanguard variant for players who want boarding, insertion, extraction, and fire support in one compact military ship.

Official RSI event material describes the Vanguard Hoplite as a long-range squad dropship with a manned turret for protection, while the Ship Matrix description frames it as a cross between the Vanguard deep-space fighter and a dedicated boarding ship, designed to insert an armored strike team and provide fire support until extraction.

The safest product-page positioning is simple:

The Vanguard Hoplite is the Vanguard you choose when you want a small-team combat dropship, not cargo utility, torpedo bombing, or pure heavy-fighter simplicity.

Build Your Aegis Dropship Fleet with the Vanguard Hoplite

The Vanguard Hoplite is one of the more compact military dropship options in Star Citizen. If you are looking to acquire this Aegis squad-transport ship, you can explore our available options in the Star Citizen Ships and Vehicles Collection.

Variant Identity Dedicated Hoplite dropship interior Designed around troop seating and insertion support, not a guaranteed easy swap into every other Vanguard role.
Combat Role Fire-support dropship reference Can fight and protect the landing zone, but it should not be judged only as a pure heavy fighter.
Core Gameplay Long-range squad insertion, boarding, extraction, fire support Best for small combat teams, FPS groups, and org operations.

Note: Star Citizen ship specifications, dropship gameplay, boarding mechanics, armor behavior, and combat balance can change between patches. For product pages, exact weapon values, troop-use systems, component behavior, and live flight performance should be treated as current gameplay-reference information rather than permanent final values.

What Makes the Vanguard Hoplite Valuable?

The Hoplite is valuable because it gives the Vanguard series a true squad-transport role. The Warden is the clean long-range heavy fighter. The Harbinger brings torpedoes. The Sentinel brings EMP and e-war support. The Hoplite brings people.

Its main selling point is the mix of small-team transport plus Vanguard combat durability. The Vanguard platform is associated with long-range missions, good survivability, and military endurance; official Vanguard material describes the line as a deep-space fighter platform with extensive range, durable systems, and a reputation for surviving combat damage.

A clean product-page sentence would be:

The Hoplite is not the Vanguard with the biggest gun or the most special weapon system. It is the Vanguard that turns the platform into a compact combat insertion ship.

That is the core buyer message. The Hoplite is for players who care about FPS teams, boarding operations, bunker support, and military group play.

Squad Dropship Gameplay Role

The Hoplite’s main role is squad insertion and extraction. It is designed to bring a small armed team to a target area, support them with ship firepower, and help extract them after the job is done. RSI’s public event descriptions position the Hoplite as a long-range squad dropship with turret protection.

In practical gameplay, the Hoplite fits several roles:

Gameplay Use Why the Hoplite Fits
Small-team insertion Six dedicated jump seats make it useful for a compact assault team.
Boarding support Ship Matrix wording connects the Hoplite with boarding-ship identity and strike-team insertion.
Bunker / FPS support Can bring a small group to ground objectives without using a large dropship.
Escort and extraction Vanguard weapons and turret help cover the team during arrival or departure.
Long-range military operations Vanguard base identity supports long-range combat deployment.
Org assault teams Gives a small combat group a focused transport ship instead of a cargo hauler.

The Hoplite should be described as a compact Vanguard dropship, not a general-purpose heavy fighter.

Six-Seat Strike Team Identity

The Hoplite’s main difference from the other Vanguard variants is its troop compartment. Current community reference material describes dedicated seating and specialized equipment for up to six personnel, making it useful for insertion and extraction missions.

This gives the ship a clear gameplay loop:

  1. Load a small armed team.
  2. Travel to the target area.
  3. Approach under Vanguard protection.
  4. Deploy the team.
  5. Provide ship-side overwatch or hold nearby.
  6. Extract the team after the objective.

A clean product-page sentence:

The Hoplite is best when the passengers matter. Without a team to carry, the Warden, Sentinel, or Harbinger usually make more sense.

Fire Support and Combat Value

The Hoplite is not just a passenger shuttle. It keeps meaningful Vanguard combat value. Current reference material lists the Hoplite with a Size 5 gun hardpoint, four nose guns, a manned turret, and missile racks holding eight Size 2 missiles.

This matters because many troop carriers are vulnerable once they arrive. The Hoplite can participate in the fight, cover the landing zone, and support extraction. It should still not be sold as the best pure heavy fighter, because its special value is the squad bay.

A clean product-page sentence:

The Hoplite can fight, but its best combat value is protecting the team it carries.

For buyers who want only fighter performance, the Warden or Guardian may be cleaner. For buyers who want a compact boarding team ship, the Hoplite makes more sense.

Vanguard Durability and Long-Range Identity

The Hoplite benefits from the Vanguard platform. RSI’s original Vanguard material emphasizes extensive mission range, deep-space operation, twin-engine survivability, tungsten-alloy superstructure, and the ship’s use from planetary bases and rough combat conditions.

A clean product-page sentence:

The Hoplite is a dropship with fighter DNA, not a cargo ship that happens to have seats.

That sentence is useful for product pages because it immediately separates the Hoplite from ships like the Cutlass Steel.

No Cargo or Vehicle Utility

The Hoplite has 0 SCU cargo, so it should not be positioned as a cargo runner, box-delivery ship, small hauler, or vehicle transport platform. Current community data lists the Hoplite with 0 SCU cargo.

A safe customer-facing sentence:

The Hoplite carries soldiers, not freight.

That is important because the ship has a walkable interior and transport role, which can make some buyers expect utility. Its utility is team insertion, not cargo profit.

Modularity and Vanguard Variant Expectations

The Hoplite should be treated as its own Vanguard variant. RSI’s Shipyard article explains that the Hoplite is a Vanguard Warden variant, but it does not have the same internal module hardpoint used for the other Vanguard room modules. It can still mount nose and turret items from other Vanguards, but customers should not expect the Hoplite to freely become a Warden, Harbinger, or Sentinel through the same interior module logic.

A good product-page sentence:

Buy the Hoplite because you want the Hoplite role, not because you expect it to be an easy modular swap into every other Vanguard variant.

Solo and Two-Crew Gameplay

The Hoplite can be flown by one pilot, but it is better with a second player and a passenger team. Current community data lists the Hoplite with 1–2 crew, and the ship’s role clearly improves when the turret and troop capacity are actually used.

A practical Hoplite team may include:

Role Purpose
Pilot Handles flight, landing zone approach, extraction timing, and ship positioning.
Turret / Support Operator Covers the ship’s blind spots and helps protect the drop zone.
Squad Leader Coordinates the six-person team and target objective.
Assault Team Uses the jump seats for boarding, bunker, or ground combat.
Escort Wingman Protects the Hoplite from hostile ships during insertion.
Extraction Cover Keeps the team alive while boarding or returning to the ship.

A practical Hoplite mission should feel like a small-team insertion, not a normal Vanguard patrol with extra seats. The pilot needs to choose the approach route, keep the ship alive near the landing zone, and decide whether to stay for cover or reposition for extraction. The turret operator helps protect the drop zone, watches for threats, and gives the squad a safer window to move. The passengers matter because they are the payload: if the team is not boarding, clearing a bunker, securing an objective, or preparing for extraction, the Hoplite loses much of its purpose. In real use, the Hoplite rewards coordination, landing discipline, and squad timing more than solo fighter efficiency.

The Hoplite is usable alone, but it is not really about solo efficiency. It becomes meaningful when it carries people.

Vanguard Comparisons

Hoplite vs Warden

Ship Best For Main Difference
Vanguard Hoplite Squad insertion and boarding support Trades the normal Vanguard living / survival focus for troop seating and dropship function.
Vanguard Warden Clean long-range heavy fighter Better for pilots who want the most straightforward Vanguard combat experience.
Choose the Warden if you want the standard long-range heavy fighter. Choose the Hoplite if you want the Vanguard that carries a strike team.

Hoplite vs Harbinger

Ship Best For Main Difference
Vanguard Hoplite Dropship and boarding support Carries a small team and supports insertion.
Vanguard Harbinger Fighter-bomber strike Uses torpedoes for heavier attack pressure.
Choose the Hoplite if your payload is soldiers. Choose the Harbinger if your payload is torpedoes.

Hoplite vs Sentinel

Ship Best For Main Difference
Vanguard Hoplite Physical squad transport Moves players into the fight.
Vanguard Sentinel EMP / electronic-warfare support Disrupts enemy ships and creates openings.
Choose the Hoplite if your group needs a transport. Choose the Sentinel if your group needs disruption.

Dropship Comparisons

Hoplite vs Prowler

RSI’s Prowler Q&A says the Prowler is best for stealth deployment and emergency extraction, while Hoplite and Redeemer more heavily incorporate direct ship-to-ship combat considerations.

Ship Best For Main Difference
Vanguard Hoplite Direct combat insertion More Vanguard fighter DNA and direct ship-to-ship support.
Esperia Prowler Stealth deployment and emergency extraction More alien, stealthy, and specialized around troop deployment style.
Choose the Hoplite if you want a compact Aegis combat dropship. Choose the Prowler if you want stealthy Tevarin-style insertion.

Hoplite vs Valkyrie

Ship Best For Main Difference
Vanguard Hoplite Small strike team insertion More compact and fighter-like, with six-seat squad transport identity.
Anvil Valkyrie Larger squad deployment and heavier dropship operations Bigger troop capacity and a more dedicated troop-carrier layout.
Choose the Hoplite for a small elite team. Choose the Valkyrie for a larger dropship operation.

Hoplite vs Cutlass Steel

Ship Best For Main Difference
Vanguard Hoplite Compact long-range military insertion Vanguard feel, smaller team, and stronger fighter identity.
Drake Cutlass Steel Budget Drake troop transport More seats and Drake practicality, but less refined military survivability.
Choose the Hoplite if you want Aegis durability and Vanguard feel. Choose the Cutlass Steel if you want more seats in a cheaper, rougher package.

Combat Balance Expectations

The Hoplite has solid combat value, but product pages should avoid calling it the best Vanguard fighter. Its role is troop insertion and fire support. Current community data gives it meaningful pilot DPS, crew DPS, missiles, and shield / hull values, but these numbers can shift with live balance changes.

A safe product-page sentence:

The Hoplite is strongest when its combat ability supports an insertion mission, not when it is judged only as a pure fighter.

Explore Vanguard Hoplite Upgrade Paths

If you prefer to build toward the Vanguard Hoplite from an existing ship, you can view our Star Citizen Vanguard Hoplite CCU Upgrades and plan a more flexible Aegis dropship, combat support, or Vanguard fleet upgrade path over time.

Vanguard Hoplite vs Other Star Citizen Dropships and Fighters

Ship Fleet Option Primary Core Role Compared with Vanguard Hoplite
Vanguard Warden Long-Range Heavy Fighter Warden is cleaner for combat. Hoplite carries a small strike team.
Vanguard Harbinger Fighter-Bomber Harbinger brings torpedoes. Hoplite brings six-seat squad transport.
Vanguard Sentinel E-War / EMP Support Sentinel disrupts ships. Hoplite transports players.
Esperia Prowler Stealth Dropship Prowler is stealthier and more alien. Hoplite is more direct-combat Aegis.
Anvil Valkyrie Heavy Dropship Valkyrie supports larger troop deployment. Hoplite is smaller and more compact.
Drake Cutlass Steel Troop Transport Steel carries more troops, but Hoplite has Vanguard combat-platform identity.
Aegis Redeemer Gunship Redeemer provides turret firepower. Hoplite is for carrying troops.
Starlancer TAC Heavy Tactical Support TAC offers larger support features, medical beds, and snub utility. Hoplite is simpler and more compact.

Vanguard Hoplite Strengths and Limitations

Strategic Strengths Operational Limitations
Compact six-seat squad insertion role. 0 SCU cargo and no trade utility.
Vanguard combat DNA gives it more direct fire support than many troop ships. Not the best pure Vanguard fighter.
Manned turret helps protect the ship and drop zone. Full value depends on having passengers or a team.
Useful for boarding, bunker, FPS, and org assault missions. Boarding and FPS systems may change with future patches.
Long-range Vanguard platform gives it clear military identity. Smaller troop capacity than Valkyrie or Cutlass Steel.
Aegis style and durability appeal to military fleet owners. Not stealth-focused like the Prowler.
Good bridge between fighter and dropship roles. Hoplite interior should not be treated as a general Vanguard module swap.

Who Should Buy the Vanguard Hoplite?

The Vanguard Hoplite is best for players who want a compact military dropship with a clear combat-platform identity. It is especially suitable for FPS teams, boarding groups, bunker crews, small organizations, Aegis fans, military roleplay groups, and players who want a Vanguard that can bring friends directly into the mission.

It is also a good choice for players who like the Vanguard platform but want a role that is not simply “heavy fighter.” The Hoplite gives the series a human-payload mission: transport the squad, support the landing, and extract the team.

Players who want the best pure Vanguard fighter should choose the Warden. Players who want torpedoes should choose the Harbinger. Players who want EMP support should choose the Sentinel. Players who want stealthy troop insertion should compare the Prowler. Players who want larger troop deployment should compare the Valkyrie. But for a small-team Aegis dropship with Vanguard fire support, the Vanguard Hoplite is one of the more direct choices in Star Citizen.

Vanguard Hoplite FAQ

Is the Vanguard Hoplite worth buying in Star Citizen?

The Vanguard Hoplite is worth buying if you want a compact Aegis dropship for small-team insertion, boarding support, FPS missions, and Vanguard-style fire support. It is not ideal if you want cargo, torpedoes, stealth deployment, or the cleanest pure heavy-fighter experience.

Is the Vanguard Hoplite Flight Ready?

Yes. Current community data tracks the Vanguard Hoplite as Flight Ready and lists its flight-ready history from Alpha 2.6.0.

What is the main role of the Vanguard Hoplite?

The Hoplite’s main role is dropship and boarding support. RSI event material describes it as a long-range squad dropship with a manned turret for protection, while Ship Matrix wording describes it as a cross between a Vanguard deep-space fighter and a dedicated boarding ship.

How many crew does the Vanguard Hoplite need?

Current community data lists the Hoplite with 1–2 crew. One pilot can fly it, while a second player can add turret and support value.

How many troops can the Hoplite carry?

Current reference material describes the Hoplite with dedicated seating and specialized equipment for up to six personnel, making it a compact strike-team transport.

Does the Vanguard Hoplite have cargo?

No. Current community data lists the Hoplite with 0 SCU cargo, so it should not be purchased for hauling, delivery missions, cargo trading, or general utility gameplay.

How big is the Vanguard Hoplite?

Current community data lists the Hoplite at 38.5m length, 40m width, and 8.5m height, with a medium ship classification.

Is the Hoplite better than the Vanguard Warden?

The Hoplite is better if you need to carry a small team. The Warden is better if you want the cleanest long-range Vanguard heavy fighter. Choose Hoplite for squad insertion; choose Warden for direct fighter use.

Is the Hoplite better than the Harbinger?

The Hoplite is better for troop transport and boarding support. The Harbinger is better for fighter-bomber gameplay with torpedoes. Choose Hoplite for soldiers; choose Harbinger for strike ordnance.

Is the Hoplite better than the Sentinel?

The Hoplite and Sentinel solve different problems. The Hoplite transports players, while the Sentinel disrupts enemy ships with e-war and EMP identity. Choose Hoplite for insertion; choose Sentinel for battlefield control.

Is the Hoplite better than the Prowler?

The Hoplite is better if you want a direct-combat Aegis dropship with Vanguard fighter DNA. The Prowler is better if you want stealthy Tevarin-style deployment and emergency extraction; RSI’s Prowler Q&A specifically frames the Prowler around stealth deployment while Hoplite leans more into direct ship-to-ship combat considerations.

Is the Hoplite better than the Valkyrie?

The Hoplite is better for a smaller six-person strike team and compact Vanguard-style insertion. The Valkyrie is better for larger troop deployment and more dedicated heavy-dropship operations.

Should I choose the Hoplite or Valkyrie?

Choose the Hoplite if you want a compact Vanguard-based dropship for a six-person strike team, small-team insertion, boarding support, and Aegis fire support. Choose the Valkyrie if you want a larger dedicated dropship with more troop capacity and a broader troop-deployment layout.

Is the Hoplite better than the Cutlass Steel?

The Hoplite is better if you want Aegis military quality, Vanguard durability, and a smaller elite-team role. The Cutlass Steel is better if you want more troop seats in a rougher Drake package.

Can the Hoplite be used solo?

Yes, but solo use misses much of the ship’s purpose. A solo pilot can fly and fight, but the Hoplite becomes meaningful when it carries a squad or uses a second player for turret support.

Is the Hoplite good for PvE?

Yes, especially for bunker runs, FPS group missions, and combat missions where carrying a small team matters. It can also fight, but players who only want PvE ship combat may prefer the Warden, Harbinger, Guardian, or F8C.

Is the Hoplite good for PvP?

The Hoplite can be useful in coordinated PvP where insertion, boarding, or team transport matters. It should not be marketed as a guaranteed PvP meta fighter, because its best value is tactical transport plus support fire.

Does the Hoplite have beds?

The Hoplite should not be sold for bed or living-space utility. Its interior is focused on troop transport rather than the Warden-style long-range fighter comfort package.

Can the Hoplite swap into other Vanguard modules?

Not like the standard Vanguard module discussion. RSI’s Shipyard article says the Hoplite is a Vanguard Warden variant and does not have the internal module hardpoint used for the other Vanguard room items, although it can still mount nose and turret items from other Vanguards.

Does the Vanguard Hoplite have good long-term value?

Yes, the Hoplite has useful long-term value for players who want compact squad insertion, boarding support, and Aegis military roleplay. Its main limitation is clear: it is a specialist dropship, so it is most valuable when your gameplay actually involves carrying and supporting a team.
