Star Citizen Personal Hangar Guide
Your Personal Hangar in Star Citizen is the persistent home hangar assigned to you at your selected place of residence.
It is different from the temporary or Public Hangars you use while traveling. Your Personal Hangar is physically tied to the residence you selected when first entering the Persistent Universe, and RSI's current Hangar FAQ states that its physical location cannot currently be changed.
That does not mean your character is permanently locked to the same city. You can travel and operate elsewhere, your later waking or regeneration behavior can change through the relevant systems, and stored assets can be moved between locations manually.
The fixed part discussed here is the physical location of the Personal Hangar itself.
Before moving on to ship retrieval, the main things to understand are:
- where your Personal Hangar is;
- how it differs from Public Hangars;
- how its size is assigned;
- where the ASOP terminal is;
- how the ship elevator works;
- how storage and freight access work;
- what happens when friends join you.
The full ASOP, cargo, inventory, and flight systems are covered separately.
Quick Answer: What Is a Personal Hangar in Star Citizen?
A Personal Hangar is your persistent home hangar at your selected Primary Residence.
RSI currently distinguishes between two main hangar types:
- Personal Hangars — located at your home residence and assigned specifically to you.
- Public Hangars — provided when you need hangar access away from home or when another hangar is required for the ship you are retrieving.
Your Personal Hangar contains the systems needed to begin working with your fleet, including an ASOP terminal near the elevators, a ship-loading platform, storage access, and freight infrastructure.
If you skipped the New Player Experience, RSI currently says you begin directly inside your Personal Hangar in front of an ASOP terminal.
Once the hangar itself makes sense, continue with How to Use the ASOP Terminal.
Where Is Your Personal Hangar?
Your Personal Hangar is physically located at the place of residence you selected when first entering the Persistent Universe.
RSI's current Hangar FAQ states that this residence determines the physical location of your Personal Hangar. Under the current system, that Personal Hangar cannot simply be relocated to another city.
For example, if your Primary Residence is New Babbage, your Personal Hangar is located there.
If you later travel to Area18, Lorville, Orison, a station, or another supported destination, you do not gain a second permanent Personal Hangar at that location. Instead, local Public Hangars provide the hangar access required while you are away from home.
If you are still deciding where to establish your initial residence, read Best Starting Location in Star Citizen before making that choice.
Your Personal Hangar Location Does Not Lock Your Character There
The location of your Personal Hangar, the location of your character, your medical regeneration location, and the location of your stored assets are related but separate concepts.
Your initial residence affects where your starting ships, vehicles, equipment, and other possessions are initially based. RSI also warns that establishing operations elsewhere may require manually moving those possessions.
That means:
Personal Hangar location
= the physical location of your persistent home hangar.
Current operating location
= wherever you choose to travel and play.
Medical regeneration / waking location
= controlled through the relevant habitation and medical systems rather than by the Personal Hangar alone.
Stored assets
= remain associated with their physical storage locations until moved.
A fixed Personal Hangar does not prevent you from living or operating elsewhere.
Personal Hangar vs Public Hangar
RSI's Hangar FAQ distinguishes between Personal Hangars and Public Hangars.
| Feature | Personal Hangar | Public Hangar |
|---|---|---|
| Located at your home residence | Yes | No |
| Assigned specifically to you | Yes | Temporary/local access |
| Persistent home location | Yes | No |
| Used while away from home | Usually no | Yes |
| Can be used when another hangar size is required | Not necessarily | Yes |
| Main purpose | Persistent home hangar | Local ship access away from home |
A Public Hangar is not simply a worse Personal Hangar.
It serves a different purpose.
RSI says Public Hangars provide hangar access while you are away from your home location and can also be used when the ship you are retrieving cannot fit into your assigned Personal Hangar.
You therefore do not need to return to your home city every time you want to access a ship.
How Is Your Personal Hangar Size Determined?
When your Personal Hangar is first established, its size is based on your eligible pledge fleet.
According to RSI's current Hangar FAQ, the assigned hangar is intended to accommodate the largest relevant pledged ship in your fleet when the hangar is established.
RSI currently provides these examples:
| Hangar Size | Official Example Ships |
|---|---|
| Small | Mirai Fury, RSI Aurora LX |
| Medium | RSI Ursa, Anvil Retaliator |
| Large | Drake Caterpillar, MISC Starfarer |
| Extra Large | Aegis Reclaimer, Origin 890 Jump |
These are official examples, not a complete ship-to-hangar-size list.
Do not assume every ship not shown in the table belongs to a particular class solely by comparing its dimensions.
Can You Upgrade Your Personal Hangar Size?
Not through a normal direct hangar-upgrade system under the current rules.
RSI's Hangar FAQ states that there is currently no normal way to select a specific Personal Hangar size or directly upgrade an already assigned Personal Hangar.
It also states that obtaining a larger ship after the Personal Hangar has already been assigned—whether through a later pledge or in-game purchase—does not currently increase the size of that Personal Hangar.
That does not prevent you from using the larger ship.
When another hangar size is required, RSI says the game can provide an appropriate Public Hangar.
What Is Inside a Personal Hangar?
The current Personal Hangar system combines several different functions in one persistent home space.
The systems most relevant to a new player are:
- ASOP terminal
- ship elevator / loading platform
- hangar elevators
- storage access
- Freight Manager and Freight Elevator
- space for ships, vehicles, cargo, and party activity
Each system has a different purpose.
The ASOP Terminal
RSI's current Hangar FAQ states that Personal Hangars have an ASOP terminal near the elevators.
This terminal is where you interact with your available ships and vehicles.
Depending on the current vehicle state, ASOP may present actions involving concepts such as:
- Deliver;
- Retrieve;
- Store;
- Claim.
Those actions are not interchangeable.
This article does not reproduce the complete retrieval workflow. When you are ready to bring out your first ship, continue with How to Use the ASOP Terminal in Star Citizen.
The Ship Elevator
The large marked section of the hangar floor functions as the ship-loading elevator.
CIG's Personal & Instanced Hangars implementation introduced ship elevators so requested ships can be brought physically into the hangar. The platform lowers and raises as ships are delivered, retrieved, or stored.
One safety rule is especially important:
Do not treat the active ship-elevator platform as long-term storage space.
CIG's implementation notes warn that objects left on the ship-loading elevator can be cleaned up when the elevator is used.
If you are organizing equipment, cargo, or vehicles around the hangar, keep the operational platform clear.
Freight Elevators and Cargo Access
Personal Hangars also use Freight Elevators to move physical cargo and larger items between location storage and the hangar floor.
CIG introduced this workflow with the Personal & Instanced Hangars system, while the current Cargo Guide continues to document the physical cargo-handling model.
At a high level, the flow is:
Location storage / warehouse → Freight Manager → Freight Elevator → physical cargo in the hangar
When putting cargo back into storage, the process works in reverse:
Physical cargo → Freight Elevator → Freight Manager → location storage / warehouse
The Cargo Guide also documents the broader manual-cargo workflow, including the use of tractor beams when moving cargo between elevators, ships, and other physical spaces.
This article stops at the hangar-level concept. Detailed loading, tractor-beam operation, hauling contracts, and cargo management belong in the dedicated Star Citizen Cargo Guide and Tractor Beam Guide.
Storage Access Inside the Hangar
Personal Hangars provide access to storage associated with the local location.
RSI's current Personal Inventory documentation states that storage-access kiosks are available inside Personal Hangars near the elevators.
Your stored equipment is not one universal inventory that automatically follows your character everywhere.
Items stored at one location remain associated with that location until moved through the appropriate systems.
The practical rule is:
Your Personal Hangar provides access to storage at your home location, but traveling elsewhere does not automatically bring every stored item with you.
The complete relationship between location storage, carried equipment, ship storage, and other inventory contexts belongs in the later Star Citizen Inventory Guide.
Can Friends Enter Your Personal Hangar?
Yes.
RSI's current Hangar FAQ states that party members can visit the hangar owner's Personal Hangar.
This allows groups to use the space for activities such as:
- boarding a multicrew ship;
- helping with freight;
- helping with cargo handling;
- preparing to leave together.
The article does not assume additional permission systems beyond what the current official documentation supports.
Can You Spawn Ground Vehicles in a Personal Hangar?
Yes.
RSI's current documentation says all Personal Hangars can spawn ground-based vehicles.
But spawning a ground vehicle and being able to drive it directly outside are two different things.
Not every Personal Hangar location has a suitable ground-level garage exit.
Current RSI guidance specifically identifies New Babbage and Lorville as good choices when practical ground-vehicle access matters because those locations provide appropriate drive-out access.
So the two questions are:
Can the Personal Hangar spawn the ground vehicle?
Yes.
Can you drive directly out of every Personal Hangar location?
No.
The dedicated RSI Ground Vehicles and Initial Spawn Points guidance is the preferred current source for this distinction.
This is also why Best Starting Location in Star Citizen treats New Babbage and Lorville differently when ground vehicles are part of your initial plans.
What Should You Do the First Time You Enter Your Personal Hangar?
Your first visit does not require mastering every hangar system.
1. Find the Main Elevators
Know where you entered the hangar and where the elevator access is located.
This gives you a reference point for leaving the hangar or returning to the surrounding spaceport.
2. Locate the ASOP Terminal
RSI says an ASOP terminal is available near the elevators in your Personal Hangar.
You do not need to experiment with every option.
Just know where the terminal is before you move to the next guide.
3. Identify the Ship Elevator Area
The large central loading platform is operational equipment.
Keep loose objects away from it when retrieving or storing ships.
4. Identify Storage and Freight Access
Knowing where the storage kiosks and freight systems are will make later inventory and cargo tasks easier.
5. Move On to Ship Retrieval
Once you understand the layout, continue with How to Use the ASOP Terminal rather than guessing what Deliver, Retrieve, Store, or Claim means.
What Happens If You Skipped the Tutorial?
If you chose to forego the New Player Experience, RSI's current Getting Started guide says you begin directly inside your Personal Hangar in front of an ASOP terminal.
That means players who skip onboarding arrive at this stage of the beginner roadmap immediately.
You have not lost access to normal Persistent Universe gameplay.
If you are still deciding whether the onboarding path is useful, the Star Citizen Tutorial Guide explains the difference between following and skipping the New Player Experience.
What If You Are Away From Your Home City?
You do not need to return to your Personal Hangar every time you want ship access.
RSI says Public Hangars provide local hangar access when you are away from your home location.
The distinction is:
At your home residence:
Personal Hangar
Away from home:
Public Hangar
Public Hangars can also provide the appropriate hangar size when a ship cannot use the Personal Hangar originally assigned to you.
Common Personal Hangar Problems in Alpha 4.10.2
Star Citizen Alpha 4.10.2 has current documented issues involving hangars, ASOP terminals, and related systems.
These are patch-specific problems, not general rules for how Personal Hangars are supposed to work.
My Personal Hangar Is Missing
First confirm that you are at the residence where your Personal Hangar is physically located.
You should not expect your Personal Hangar to appear in every city you visit.
There is also a specific Alpha 4.10.2 edge case documented by RSI.
For Error 41013, RSI states that Character Repair will usually resolve the error, but performing that repair is likely to cause the player's Personal Hangar to temporarily vanish.
That does not mean the hangar has been permanently deleted.
If the disappearance occurred after using Character Repair for that issue, follow the current Known Issues documentation rather than assuming the hangar has been lost permanently.
I Am at Another City and Cannot Find My Personal Hangar
That is expected.
Your Personal Hangar is physically located at your selected residence. Away from home, use the local Public Hangar provided through that location's normal ship-access systems.
My Ship Is Not Appearing
That is usually an ASOP or ship-retrieval issue, not a question about what Personal Hangars are.
Continue with How to Use the ASOP Terminal.
If the terminal itself is malfunctioning, use the dedicated ASOP Terminal Not Working troubleshooting guide.
Alpha 4.10.2 currently includes a documented issue where some ASOP terminals may fail to show the expected Deliver option.
That bug should not be interpreted as a general rule for how ASOP or Personal Hangars normally behave.
My Hangar Has No Audio
RSI's Alpha 4.10.2 Known Issues documentation distinguishes Personal Hangars from other hangars in this case.
Personal Hangars retain the expected ambiance and hangar sounds, while other hangars may experience missing hangar audio.
Do not assume that all hangars are currently affected in the same way.
Something I Left on the Ship Platform Disappeared
Do not use the active ship elevator as persistent storage.
CIG's Personal & Instanced Hangars implementation notes warn that objects left on the ship-loading platform can be cleaned up when the elevator is used.
Use proper storage or other safe hangar areas instead.
Personal Hangar Tips for New Players
Keep the Ship Elevator Clear
Treat the platform as operational machinery rather than permanent floor storage.
Separate Hangar Problems From ASOP Problems
If you can enter the hangar normally but cannot deliver or retrieve the expected ship, the actual problem may be the ASOP system.
Use the relevant ASOP guide rather than troubleshooting the entire hangar.
Do Not Expect Your Personal Hangar in Every City
Under the current system, your persistent Personal Hangar remains tied to your selected residence.
Public Hangars handle local access elsewhere.
Remember Where Your Equipment Is Stored
Location storage is physical and location-dependent.
Traveling somewhere else does not automatically move everything stored at your home location.
Plan Ground Vehicles Around Drive-Out Access
All Personal Hangars can spawn ground vehicles.
Practical drive-out access is currently documented at New Babbage and Lorville.
Star Citizen Personal Hangar FAQ
What Is a Personal Hangar in Star Citizen?
A Personal Hangar is the persistent home hangar assigned to you at your selected place of residence. RSI distinguishes it from Public Hangars used away from home.
Where Is My Personal Hangar?
It is physically located at the residence you selected when first establishing your character in the Persistent Universe.
Can I Move My Personal Hangar to Another City?
Not under the current system described by RSI's Hangar FAQ.
The Personal Hangar remains tied to the selected residence, although your character can travel and operate elsewhere.
What Is the Difference Between a Personal Hangar and a Public Hangar?
Your Personal Hangar is your persistent home hangar.
Public Hangars provide local ship access while you are away from home or when another hangar size is required for the ship being retrieved.
What Determines My Personal Hangar Size?
RSI currently says the initial Personal Hangar is assigned according to the relevant pledged fleet state and is large enough to accommodate the largest applicable ship when the hangar is established.
Is the Official Hangar-Size Table a Complete Ship List?
No.
RSI provides example ships for Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large hangars. Those examples should not be treated as a complete classification list for every ship.
Can I Upgrade My Personal Hangar?
RSI currently says there is no standard method to directly choose or upgrade an already assigned Personal Hangar size.
What Happens If I Get a Larger Ship Later?
Obtaining a larger ship after your Personal Hangar has already been assigned does not currently increase its size.
When another hangar size is needed, Public Hangars provide the documented fallback.
Is There an ASOP Terminal Inside My Personal Hangar?
Yes.
RSI says a Personal Hangar has an ASOP terminal near the elevators.
Can Friends Enter My Personal Hangar?
Yes.
Party members can visit the hangar owner's Personal Hangar and help with activities such as boarding, freight, and cargo handling.
Can I Spawn Ground Vehicles in My Personal Hangar?
Yes.
Current RSI documentation says all Personal Hangars can spawn ground-based vehicles.
Can I Drive a Ground Vehicle Out of Every Personal Hangar?
No.
Current RSI guidance identifies New Babbage and Lorville as the documented locations with suitable ground-level garage exits.
What Is the Freight Elevator For?
It connects physical cargo handling in the hangar with location storage or warehouse systems through the Freight Manager workflow.
Why Did an Item Disappear From the Ship Elevator?
The ship-loading elevator should not be used as permanent storage.
CIG warns that objects left on the platform can be cleaned up when the elevator operates.
What Should I Learn After the Personal Hangar?
The next step is learning How to Use the ASOP Terminal so you understand the ship-delivery, retrieval, storage, and claim states relevant to your vehicle.
Where to Go Next
Once you understand your Personal Hangar, the next practical task is getting your ship onto the hangar platform.
That is where the ASOP Terminal Guide takes over.
The beginner roadmap remains:
Starting Location → Tutorial → Personal Hangar → ASOP Terminal → Find Your Ship → Start Your Ship → Leave the Hangar
If you skipped the tutorial and began directly inside your Personal Hangar, you are already at this stage.
If the terminal reports that a ship has been retrieved but you still cannot locate it, continue instead to How to Find Your Ship in Star Citizen.
Final Summary
Your Star Citizen Personal Hangar is your persistent home hangar at the residence selected when your initial setup is established.
It is not the same as every hangar you will use later.
At your home location, you have your Personal Hangar. When you travel elsewhere—or when another hangar size is required—Public Hangars provide the local ship access you need.
Your initial Personal Hangar size is based on the relevant pledge fleet state when it is established, and obtaining a larger ship afterward does not currently auto-upgrade that hangar.
Inside the hangar, the systems most relevant to beginners are the ASOP terminal, ship-loading elevator, storage access, and freight infrastructure.
The ship elevator should not be treated as persistent storage, and freight elevators connect physical cargo handling with location storage through the Freight Manager system.
Party members can visit the owner's Personal Hangar.
All Personal Hangars can spawn ground vehicles, but current RSI guidance specifically identifies New Babbage and Lorville as the locations with suitable ground-level drive-out access.
Once the hangar itself makes sense, continue with How to Use the ASOP Terminal in Star Citizen.
