Aegis Vanguard Hoplite Standalone Ship Gameplay Guide

The Aegis Vanguard Hoplite is a medium dropship built for Star Citizen players who want heavy-fighter durability, strong forward firepower, and the ability to transport an armed strike team directly into combat. Developed by Aegis Dynamics from the proven Vanguard platform, the Hoplite is not simply a Vanguard with extra passenger seats. It is a dedicated military insertion and extraction ship designed to carry ground troops into dangerous locations while retaining enough combat capability to support them from the air.

Unlike the Vanguard Warden, Sentinel, or Harbinger, the Hoplite replaces much of the Vanguard family's long-duration living and specialist interior space with a troop compartment built around six jump seats, weapon storage, and rapid rear-ramp access. It keeps the Vanguard's heavy fighter foundation, including substantial forward weapons, a manned turret, missiles, strong shields, and long-range operating capability.

Current gameplay reference data lists the Vanguard Hoplite as Flight Ready, with a 48m length, 1–2 operating crew, six dedicated jump seats, no dedicated cargo grid, one Size 5 pilot weapon, four Size 2 nose weapons, a manned turret with two Size 2 guns, and eight Size 2 missiles. This combination makes the Hoplite one of the more combat-capable small-team dropships currently available in Star Citizen.

Build Your Aegis Strike Fleet with the Vanguard Hoplite

The Vanguard Hoplite remains one of the key Aegis ships for players who want to combine space combat with FPS insertion and extraction gameplay. If you are looking to acquire this military dropship, you can explore our available options in the Star Citizen Ships and Vehicles Collection.

What Makes the Vanguard Hoplite Valuable?

The Vanguard Hoplite is valuable because it combines two roles that are normally separated between different ships. It is both a capable combat spacecraft and a dedicated small-team dropship.

Many personnel transports can move players from one location to another, but they depend heavily on escort ships once combat begins. The Hoplite comes from the Vanguard heavy-fighter platform, which means it retains enough forward firepower, shielding, missiles, and turret coverage to participate directly in the fight.

Its six jump seats are equally important. Instead of using unsecured cargo space as improvised passenger transport, the Hoplite provides dedicated seating for a strike team. Players can load armed infantry, fly into a hostile landing zone, deploy them through the rear ramp, and remain nearby to provide aerial support.

This gives the Hoplite a particularly clear role in organization gameplay. A small group does not necessarily need a Valkyrie-sized transport every time it wants to move a tactical team. The Hoplite offers a smaller alternative that keeps much more of the combat personality of a heavy fighter.

Dropship and Boarding Gameplay Role

The Vanguard Hoplite's main role is military insertion and extraction. Aegis adapted the Vanguard platform specifically to deliver an armored strike team while maintaining enough firepower to protect the team before, during, and after deployment.

Official RSI material describes the Hoplite as a boarding ship and long-range squad dropship. That identity separates it from normal Vanguard variants. The Warden is primarily a long-range heavy fighter, while the Hoplite turns the rear section of the spacecraft into a dedicated troop deployment area.

Gameplay Use Why the Vanguard Hoplite Fits
Troop insertion Six dedicated jump seats provide secure transport for a small strike team.
Combat extraction Rear-ramp access allows troops to board quickly after an operation.
Bunker missions Carries several FPS players and their equipment in one combat-capable ship.
Boarding operations Designed around transporting an armed team toward hostile spacecraft or facilities. Fits Legionnaire concepts.
Aerial fire support Heavy pilot weapons and a manned turret allow the Hoplite to support deployed troops.
Organization events Gives small tactical groups a dedicated transport without requiring a large dropship.
Escort combat Vanguard weapons and durability allow the Hoplite to defend itself during longer deployments.

The Hoplite should not be treated like a normal passenger ship. Its troop compartment is built around combat deployment rather than comfort. The purpose is to get armed players into a dangerous location and give them a reliable way to leave again.

Troop Transport and Strike Team Utility

The Hoplite's most important difference from other Vanguard variants is its troop compartment. The interior includes six dedicated jump seats designed to secure personnel during flight.

This gives the ship a natural seven-player deployment profile when one pilot carries six troops. Adding a turret gunner creates a larger operating group, but the six jump seats remain the core of the dropship layout.

For FPS missions, those seats provide clear practical value. A team can organize before departure, carry rifles and equipment, remain seated during aggressive flight, and deploy together once the pilot reaches the landing zone.

The rear ramp is especially useful for this role because it gives the strike team a direct exit from the troop compartment. The pilot can land, lower the ramp, deploy the team, and leave the area quickly if enemy fire becomes too heavy.

The Vanguard Hoplite is not designed to move the largest infantry force. It is designed to move a small armed team quickly and give that team a combat-capable spacecraft for insertion and extraction.

This makes the Hoplite particularly attractive for smaller organizations and groups that regularly play FPS missions together.

Heavy Fighter Firepower

Although the Hoplite is classified as a dropship, it retains the aggressive weapon layout associated with the Vanguard family.

Current gameplay reference data gives the pilot one Size 5 weapon mount supported by four Size 2 nose weapons. This creates a strong forward-facing weapon package for a troop transport and allows the Hoplite to engage fighters, ground targets, and other medium spacecraft without immediately depending on an escort.

The weapon configuration rewards pilots who keep targets in front of the ship. The four nose guns and main weapon concentrate damage in the forward arc, which is useful during attack runs or when clearing threats around a deployment zone.

The Hoplite should still not be confused with a dedicated light or medium fighter. It is larger and heavier than ships such as the Gladius or Hornet, and it gives up some agility in exchange for durability, range, crew utility, and troop transport.

That tradeoff fits the mission. A dropship does not need to win every turning fight. It needs enough firepower to break through danger, protect the troops onboard, and survive long enough to complete the deployment.

Turret and Multi-Crew Combat Support

The Vanguard Hoplite includes a manned dorsal turret equipped with two Size 2 weapons in its current standard configuration.

A second player in the turret adds useful defensive coverage, particularly when the pilot is concentrating on flying toward a landing zone or keeping the main forward weapons on a larger target.

The turret becomes especially useful during extraction. A pilot may need to keep the ship stable while troops move toward the rear ramp, leaving the turret gunner to watch for approaching fighters or other threats.

This creates a simple but useful multi-crew relationship. The Hoplite does not require a large crew, but a pilot and turret gunner can make the ship significantly more effective during organized operations.

The Hoplite works with one pilot, but adding a turret gunner allows the ship to protect its passengers while the pilot concentrates on the deployment itself.

For small organizations, this is easier to coordinate than a larger dropship that requires several players before its defensive systems become effective.

Weapons Storage and FPS Support

A dropship becomes much more useful when the troops onboard can also bring the equipment required for the mission. The Vanguard Hoplite includes dedicated weapon storage, with current reference data listing ten rifle slots.

That storage complements the six jump seats well. A strike team can bring rifles and other FPS equipment without depending entirely on personal inventory or leaving weapons unsecured around the cabin.

This is particularly useful for bunker assaults, security operations, organization events, rescue missions, and any future boarding gameplay where a prepared infantry team needs to move directly from spacecraft combat into FPS combat.

Weapon racks also make the interior easier to organize. Instead of treating the Hoplite as a heavy fighter that happens to carry passengers, the combination of jump seats and equipment storage reinforces its role as a proper military insertion platform.

The Hoplite does not have a commercial cargo grid, but that is not a major limitation for its intended role. The interior space has been assigned to people and combat equipment rather than freight.

Durability and Long-Range Support

The Vanguard family was designed around durability and long-range combat operations, and the Hoplite retains much of that foundation.

Current gameplay reference data lists two Size 2 shield generators, while the overall Vanguard chassis provides considerably more survivability than many smaller personnel transports and light fighters.

This durability is important during dropship missions. Approaching a hostile landing zone can expose the spacecraft to fighters, turrets, missiles, and ground fire. A ship carrying six players needs enough defensive capacity to survive mistakes that could immediately destroy a lighter transport.

The Hoplite also benefits from the Vanguard's long-range design philosophy. It can participate in missions that require more travel than a short-range shuttle would comfortably support.

That does not make it a full expedition ship. Unlike the Warden, the Hoplite sacrifices much of the interior equipment associated with long-duration crew comfort in order to create space for troops.

The Hoplite keeps the Vanguard's combat endurance, but its interior is optimized for a strike team rather than comfortable long-duration living.

This distinction is important for buyers deciding between different Vanguard variants.

Multi-Crew and Strike Team Gameplay

The Vanguard Hoplite can be flown by one pilot, but its real purpose appears when several players use the ship together.

A practical Hoplite operation usually begins before the ship reaches the target. The infantry team should prepare weapons and armor, the pilot should choose a safe approach, and a turret gunner can monitor threats while the ship closes on the deployment zone.

Once the Hoplite reaches the objective, the pilot can land with the rear ramp positioned toward useful cover. The strike team exits, completes the ground objective, and returns to the ship for extraction. During that time, the Hoplite can remain nearby or reposition to reduce the risk of being destroyed while stationary.

In a larger fleet, escort fighters can secure the airspace while the Hoplite concentrates on delivering infantry. In a smaller group, the Hoplite itself can provide much of the combat power needed for the mission.

Crew Role Purpose
Pilot Handles flight, approach, landing, extraction, and forward weapons.
Turret Gunner Protects the ship from fighters and threats outside the pilot's firing arc.
Strike Team Leader Coordinates the six-person infantry team and deployment timing.
Assault Troops Conduct bunker clearing, boarding, security, or ground-combat objectives.
Security / Heavy Weapons Protects the landing zone and covers troop movement around the ship.
Medical Support Can accompany the strike team for field recovery even though the Hoplite has no dedicated medical bed. Fits Pisces or Cutlass Red support.

This is why the Hoplite is especially useful for coordinated groups. It connects space combat and FPS combat through a single spacecraft instead of requiring the team to switch between a fighter and a separate personnel transport.

Vanguard Hoplite vs Other Star Citizen Ships

When comparing dropships and Vanguard variants, the main question is whether you need dedicated troop transport, heavy-fighter flexibility, larger infantry capacity, stealthier insertion, or stronger specialized combat systems.

Ship Fleet Option Primary Core Role Compared with Vanguard Hoplite
Vanguard Warden Long-Range Heavy Fighter Better for traditional heavy-fighter and long-duration combat gameplay. The Hoplite replaces that interior utility with six troop seats and dropship equipment.
Vanguard Harbinger Heavy Fighter / Bomber Adds heavy torpedo strike capability. The Hoplite is better for transporting an infantry strike team.
Vanguard Sentinel Electronic Warfare Heavy Fighter Focuses on electronic combat rather than personnel deployment. The Hoplite is the Vanguard family's dedicated dropship.
Valkyrie Heavy Dropship Carries a much larger infantry force and vehicles. The Hoplite is smaller and retains more heavy-fighter character. Fits Liberator Edition.
Prowler Stealth Assault Dropship Better suited to specialized stealth insertion. The Hoplite offers conventional Aegis durability and Vanguard combat characteristics.
Cutlass Steel Assault Dropship Carries considerably more troops and emphasizes door-gun fire. The Hoplite carries a smaller team in a more durable heavy-fighter platform. Fits Cutlass Black family lines.
Legionnaire Boarding Ship Designed more specifically around ship-to-ship boarding and hacking. The Hoplite is a more traditional combat dropship and is already Flight Ready.

Vanguard Hoplite vs Vanguard Warden

The Vanguard Warden is the closest conventional comparison because both ships share the Vanguard heavy-fighter foundation.

The Warden is better for players who want a traditional long-range heavy fighter. Its interior is designed around the needs of its operating crew rather than carrying an infantry squad, making it more suitable for extended fighter operations and general heavy-combat use.

The Hoplite changes that priority. Its rear compartment is built around six jump seats, weapon storage, and rapid troop deployment. This removes some of the Warden's long-duration utility but creates an entirely different gameplay role.

If you want a Vanguard primarily for space combat and long-range heavy-fighter gameplay, choose the Warden. If you want to transport an armed team while retaining Vanguard firepower and durability, choose the Hoplite.

Vanguard Hoplite vs Valkyrie

The Valkyrie is a much larger and more dedicated troop transport. It is designed to carry a substantial infantry force and can also support vehicle deployment, giving it much greater capacity during large organization operations.

The Hoplite is smaller and more focused on squad-level missions. Its six jump seats are enough for a compact strike team, while the Vanguard chassis gives it a stronger heavy-fighter identity than a large transport.

This creates a clear choice based on operation size. The Valkyrie is better when you need to deploy a large infantry unit or vehicles. The Hoplite is easier to use when the mission only requires a small tactical team and you still want a spacecraft that can participate directly in combat.

Choose the Valkyrie for large-scale assault transport. Choose the Hoplite for smaller strike-team deployments.

Vanguard Hoplite vs Prowler

The Prowler is another specialized military dropship, but its design philosophy is very different from the Hoplite.

The Prowler emphasizes stealthy insertion, alien-derived technology, and deploying troops through multiple exits. It is designed around getting an assault team close to a target with a specialized infiltration profile.

The Hoplite takes a more conventional approach. It relies on Vanguard durability, heavy forward weapons, missiles, a defensive turret, and a rear-ramp deployment system.

If you want a specialized stealth assault ship with a unique alien-inspired design, the Prowler has the clearer role. If you want a durable Aegis dropship built from a proven heavy-fighter platform, the Hoplite is easier to integrate into conventional combat operations.

Vanguard Hoplite Strengths and Limitations

Strategic Strengths Operational Limitations
Six dedicated jump seats make the Hoplite useful for small strike-team deployments. Much lower troop capacity than larger dropships such as the Valkyrie.
Heavy Vanguard forward weapons provide strong combat capability for a dropship. Less agile than conventional light and medium fighters.
Manned turret gives a second player useful defensive coverage. Maximum combat effectiveness benefits from having a turret gunner.
Ten rifle slots support organized FPS equipment storage. No dedicated commercial cargo grid.
Vanguard durability helps protect troops during hostile approaches. Larger target profile than small shuttles and light fighters.
Long-range Vanguard foundation supports extended deployments. Lacks the Warden's more comfortable long-duration crew-focused interior.
Flight Ready and usable for current FPS transport gameplay. Full ship-to-ship boarding mechanics remain dependent on future gameplay development.
Combines space combat and troop transport in one relatively compact ship. Highly specialized role provides less value to players who rarely play group FPS missions.

Who Should Buy the Vanguard Hoplite?

The Vanguard Hoplite is best for players who want to combine heavy-fighter combat with squad-level troop transport. It is especially suitable for small organizations, FPS groups, security teams, boarding-focused players, bunker mission groups, and pilots who want to move an armed team without using a much larger dropship.

It is also a strong choice for players who already like the Vanguard chassis but need a different interior role. The Hoplite keeps much of what makes the Vanguard attractive in combat while replacing crew-living functionality with dedicated seating and equipment storage for infantry.

Players who mainly want solo heavy-fighter gameplay may prefer the Vanguard Warden. Players who want torpedo capability may prefer the Harbinger. Players who want a much larger troop deployment platform may prefer the Valkyrie. Players who want a specialized stealth insertion ship may prefer the Prowler.

But for players who want a durable Aegis dropship that can carry six troops, provide meaningful aerial fire support, and operate as part of both space and FPS combat, the Vanguard Hoplite remains one of the clearest squad-transport options in Star Citizen.
