Crusader Ares Inferno Standalone Ship Gameplay Guide

The Crusader Ares Inferno is a single-seat heavy fighter built for Star Citizen players who want sustained ballistic firepower against gunships, large ships, and capital-class targets. Manufactured by Crusader Industries and built around a purpose-designed Behring Size 7 ballistic Gatling gun, the Inferno is not a conventional dogfighter or general-purpose combat ship. It is a specialized large-ship hunter made to stay on target and deliver a continuous stream of heavy ballistic rounds.

Unlike ships such as the Vanguard Warden or F8C Lightning, the Ares Inferno is not built around multiple conventional fighter weapons. Its identity comes from one bespoke SF7B Size 7 ballistic Gatling, a substantial missile loadout, reinforced armor, and a single-pilot combat layout. It trades broad weapon flexibility for sustained ballistic pressure against targets large enough to absorb extended bursts.

Current gameplay reference data lists the Ares Inferno as Flight Ready, with a single pilot, a hardware-locked Size 7 SF7B ballistic Gatling, twenty Size 3 missiles in its current missile configuration, and two Size 2 shield generators.

Build Your Crusader Combat Fleet with the Ares Inferno

The Ares Inferno remains one of the most distinctive Crusader combat ships for players who want a dedicated ballistic heavy fighter. If you are looking to acquire this Crusader anti-capital fighter, you can explore our available options in the Star Citizen Ships and Vehicles Collection.

What Makes the Ares Inferno Valuable?

The Ares Inferno is valuable because it gives one pilot access to sustained Size 7 ballistic fire from a fighter-sized platform. Instead of relying on several medium weapons, the Inferno concentrates most of its offensive identity into one enormous Gatling gun designed specifically for the Ares chassis.

Its main appeal is the SF7B ballistic Gatling. The weapon can deliver repeated high-caliber rounds against gunships and large spacecraft, giving the Inferno a very different combat rhythm from fighters that depend on short energy bursts or smaller weapons.

The Inferno also becomes increasingly useful when a target is large enough to keep under sustained fire. Against a gunship, transport, or capital vessel, the pilot can maintain a firing solution and continue applying ballistic pressure instead of depending on isolated heavy shots.

Its tradeoff is ammunition. Unlike the Ares Ion, the Inferno cannot fire its main weapon indefinitely. Every engagement consumes ballistic ammunition, so target selection and trigger discipline matter. This limitation is part of the ship's identity rather than a minor inconvenience.

Heavy Fighter Combat Gameplay Role

The Ares Inferno's main role is anti-large-ship combat. It was designed to attack heavily armored gunships and capital-class spacecraft while working either independently or as part of a larger combat group.

Official Ares material presents the Inferno as the ballistic member of the Ares family, built to tear through armor after shields have been weakened or while other fleet elements create an opening. Its sustained rate of fire makes it particularly suited to targets that are large enough to remain in the weapon's firing envelope.

Gameplay Use Why the Ares Inferno Fits
Large-ship combat The Size 7 ballistic Gatling is built around sustained fire against substantial targets.
Gunship hunting High-caliber ballistic rounds give the Inferno a clear role against durable combat ships.
Fleet support Can focus on armor and hull damage while other ships handle shields or fighter threats.
PvE bounty combat Works well when bounty targets are large enough to absorb sustained Gatling fire.
Solo heavy-fighter gameplay One pilot controls the entire ship and its major weapons.
Capital battle support Adds sustained ballistic pressure without requiring another multi-crew combat ship.

The Inferno should not be treated like a larger Gladius or Hornet. Those fighters are built around maneuverability and more conventional fighter engagements. The Inferno becomes more comfortable as the target gets larger and easier to keep inside the Gatling's firing line.

Size 7 Ballistic Gatling Power

The Ares Inferno's defining feature is its bespoke Behring SF7B Size 7 ballistic Gatling. The weapon is integrated directly into the ship and cannot simply be replaced with another standard Size 7 weapon.

The SF7B is designed around sustained fire. Instead of delivering isolated energy shots like the Ion, the Inferno puts a continuous stream of large ballistic rounds into the target. This gives the pilot more opportunities to correct aim during a burst and maintain pressure on a large ship.

That firing style works especially well against targets with large silhouettes. Gunships, heavy transports, and capital ships give the pilot enough surface area to keep multiple rounds landing during an attack run.

The Ares Inferno is not simply a fighter with a large gun. Its entire combat identity is built around keeping a Size 7 ballistic Gatling on a valuable target long enough to make sustained fire matter.

The weapon also creates the ship's biggest operational limitation. Ammunition is finite. Long bursts against poor targets can reduce how much useful firepower remains for the targets the Inferno was actually designed to fight.

Ammunition and Sustained Fire

Ammunition management is one of the most important differences between the Ares Inferno and Ares Ion. The Ion's main weapon uses energy, while the Inferno depends on a physical supply of ballistic ammunition.

This means an Inferno pilot has to think about more than simply whether a shot can land. The target also needs to be worth the ammunition.

Large targets are ideal because sustained bursts have a better chance of producing meaningful results. Spending large amounts of ammunition trying to track a small fighter can be inefficient, especially during a longer mission where resupply is not immediately available.

This gives the Inferno a natural combat cycle: locate a valuable target, establish a strong firing angle, apply a controlled burst, reposition, and repeat until the target is destroyed or the engagement is no longer worth the ammunition.

Good ammunition discipline can make the Inferno much more useful over an extended operation.

Missile and Secondary Combat Utility

The Ares Inferno is not limited to its Gatling gun. Current reference data lists the Ares platform with three missile racks capable of carrying a total of twenty Size 3 missiles.

These missiles provide useful secondary pressure during an approach or when the pilot does not want to spend main-gun ammunition immediately. They can force defensive reactions, supplement ballistic damage, or create an opening before the Inferno commits to a full Gatling attack.

Missiles do not turn the Inferno into a dedicated missile or torpedo ship. Its main identity remains the SF7B ballistic Gatling. Ships such as the Eclipse or Vanguard Harbinger are better suited to players specifically looking for torpedo-focused strike gameplay.

The Inferno's missiles work best as support for the main gun rather than as a replacement for it.

Armor and Combat Survivability

One important difference between the Inferno and Ion is protection. Official Ares Q&A describes the Inferno as having thicker and more effective armor than the Ion.

This fits the Inferno's intended combat style. A ballistic Gatling encourages the pilot to maintain a firing solution and keep applying pressure, which can expose the ship to return fire for longer periods than a single heavy energy shot.

Current gameplay reference data also lists two Size 2 shield generators. Together with the Inferno's heavier armor design, these defensive systems help support its role as an aggressive anti-large-ship fighter.

The Inferno is built to stay in a heavy fight longer than its role might suggest, but survival still depends on positioning and knowing when to disengage.

Its protection supports the mission. It does not remove the risks of attacking large armed ships.

Solo Gameplay

The Ares Inferno is a true single-seat combat ship. The pilot controls flight, the Size 7 Gatling, missiles, defensive systems, and target selection without depending on another player.

That makes it much easier to operate than multi-crew combat ships such as the Hammerhead, Perseus, or Polaris. At the same time, every combat decision falls on one pilot.

A practical Inferno engagement usually begins with target selection. The pilot should identify a target large enough to justify the ammunition, approach from a useful angle, and wait until the firing solution is stable before committing to a long burst. Missiles can be used during the approach or to create additional pressure, while the Gatling should remain focused on targets where sustained ballistic fire has the greatest value.

Against a large target, the Inferno can repeatedly make attack runs and continue applying armor and hull pressure. Against several agile fighters, the pilot may spend more ammunition and time trying to establish a useful firing solution.

Pilot Responsibility Purpose
Target Selection Prioritize ships valuable enough to justify Size 7 ballistic ammunition.
Positioning Maintain a stable attack angle for sustained Gatling fire.
Trigger Discipline Avoid wasting ammunition during poor firing opportunities.
Missile Use Add pressure without immediately consuming more main-gun ammunition.
Shield Management Protect the ship during repeated heavy-weapon attack runs.
Disengagement Leave poor engagements before ammunition or defenses are exhausted.
Fleet Coordination Let allied ships manage agile threats while the Inferno focuses on heavier targets.

This one-pilot layout is a major part of the Inferno's appeal. It provides heavy ballistic firepower without requiring a turret crew, engineer, or additional combat operator.

Explore Ares Inferno Upgrade Paths

If you prefer to build toward the Ares Inferno from an existing ship, you can view our Star Citizen Ares Inferno CCU Upgrades and plan a more flexible Crusader heavy-fighter upgrade path over time.

Ares Inferno vs Other Star Citizen Ships

When choosing a heavy fighter or anti-large-ship platform, the most important question is whether you want sustained ballistic pressure, heavy energy shots, torpedo strikes, or a more flexible conventional fighter.

Ship Fleet Option Primary Core Role Compared with Ares Inferno
Ares Ion Energy Heavy Fighter Uses a Size 7 laser cannon instead of the Inferno's ballistic Gatling. The Ion avoids ammunition limits, while the Inferno focuses on sustained ballistic fire.
Vanguard Warden Long-Range Heavy Fighter More flexible and better suited to broader heavy-fighter gameplay. The Inferno is more specialized around one massive ballistic weapon.
Eclipse Stealth Torpedo Bomber Uses stealth and Size 9 torpedoes for burst strikes. The Inferno stays active in combat and applies sustained direct fire.
Vanguard Harbinger Heavy Fighter / Torpedo Bomber Offers torpedo pressure and Vanguard utility. The Inferno brings a larger dedicated ballistic gun.
F8C Lightning Elite Heavy Fighter More conventional and flexible in fighter combat. The Inferno is more specialized against large ships.
Mirai Guardian Solo Heavy Fighter Better general-purpose heavy-fighter flexibility. The Inferno offers the more extreme ballistic anti-large-ship role. Fits QI models.
Scorpius Heavy Fighter Better suited to conventional fighter engagements and multi-weapon combat. The Inferno focuses more heavily on sustained fire against larger targets. Fits Antares.

Ares Inferno vs Ares Ion

The Ares Ion is the closest comparison because both ships share the same basic Ares platform. Their main difference is the weapon. The Inferno uses a bespoke Size 7 ballistic Gatling, while the Ion uses a bespoke Size 7 laser cannon.

The Inferno is better for players who want sustained ballistic fire, a rapid stream of high-caliber rounds, and the heavier-armored Ares variant. The Ion is better for players who want energy-weapon gameplay and do not want to manage a finite supply of main-gun ammunition.

If you want the ballistic Gatling version of the Ares, choose the Inferno. If you want the energy-cannon version, choose the Ion.

Ares Inferno vs Vanguard Warden

The Vanguard Warden is a broader heavy fighter. It offers a more conventional weapon layout, interior space, multi-crew capability, and a platform designed around long-range fighter operations.

The Inferno is more specialized. It gives up much of the Vanguard's general utility in exchange for one oversized Size 7 ballistic Gatling and a much clearer anti-large-ship identity.

If you want a heavy fighter that can handle a wider range of combat situations, the Warden is easier to use as a general-purpose ship. If you specifically want sustained ballistic fire against gunships and larger targets, the Inferno has the clearer role.

Ares Inferno vs Eclipse

The Eclipse approaches large-target combat in a completely different way. It is a stealth bomber built around Size 9 torpedoes and carefully planned strike windows. The Inferno is a heavy ballistic fighter designed to remain active in the battle and continue applying direct-fire pressure.

The Eclipse is better when the mission is built around approaching quietly, launching a heavy torpedo, and leaving. The Inferno is better when the pilot wants repeated attack runs and sustained gunfire against a large target.

Choose the Eclipse for stealth torpedo attacks. Choose the Inferno for direct ballistic heavy-fighter combat.

Ares Inferno Strengths and Limitations

Strategic Strengths Operational Limitations
Bespoke Size 7 ballistic Gatling gives the Inferno serious sustained firepower. Main-gun ammunition is finite and requires careful management.
High rate of fire works well against large target silhouettes. Long bursts against poor targets can waste valuable ammunition quickly.
Single-seat layout makes the entire ship usable by one player. No turret gunner or second crew member can assist during difficult engagements.
Twenty Size 3 missiles provide useful secondary pressure. Not a dedicated missile or torpedo platform.
Heavier armor than the Ion supports an aggressive combat role. Still vulnerable to coordinated fire and agile attackers.
Designed specifically for gunships and larger ships. Less comfortable against small, highly maneuverable fighters.
Flight Ready and available in current gameplay. Combat performance and ammunition balance may change between patches.
Strong specialist identity makes its intended role easy to understand. No dedicated cargo grid or walkable interior limits non-combat utility.

Who Should Buy the Ares Inferno?

The Ares Inferno is best for players who want a specialized single-seat heavy fighter built around sustained ballistic fire. It is especially suitable for heavy-combat pilots, organization members, bounty hunters targeting larger ships, fleet-support pilots, and players who prefer ballistic weapons over energy cannons.

It is also a good choice for players who want a ship with one clear purpose. The Inferno does not try to become a cargo hauler, expedition ship, living platform, or general-purpose daily driver. Its purpose is to bring an enormous ballistic Gatling into fights against ships large enough to justify it.

Players who mainly fight small agile ships may prefer the F8C Lightning, Hornet, Scorpius, or other conventional fighters. Players who want a broader long-range heavy fighter may prefer the Vanguard Warden. Players who want stealth torpedo strikes may prefer the Eclipse. Players who want an energy weapon without ballistic ammunition limits should compare the Ares Ion.

But for players who want a single-seat Crusader heavy fighter built around a bespoke Size 7 ballistic Gatling, the Ares Inferno remains one of the clearest specialist combat ships in Star Citizen.

Ares Inferno FAQ

Is the Ares Inferno worth buying in Star Citizen?

The Ares Inferno is worth buying if you want a single-seat heavy fighter with a bespoke Size 7 ballistic Gatling and a clear anti-large-ship role. It is less suitable for players who want cargo, interior space, light-fighter dogfighting, or a flexible daily ship.

Is the Ares Inferno Flight Ready?

Yes. The Ares Inferno is Flight Ready and has been available in the LIVE environment since the Ares series was introduced with Alpha 3.15.1.

What is the main role of the Ares Inferno?

The Ares Inferno's main role is heavy fighter combat against gunships, large ships, and capital-class targets. Its SF7B ballistic Gatling is designed to apply sustained high-caliber fire against substantial spacecraft.

What weapon does the Ares Inferno use?

The Ares Inferno uses a bespoke Behring SF7B Size 7 ballistic Gatling. The weapon was built specifically for the Ares Inferno and is integrated directly into the ship.

Can the Ares Inferno swap its Size 7 Gatling?

No. The Ares Size 7 weapons are bespoke to their respective variants. Official Q&A states that the weapons cannot be swapped between the Inferno and Ion or replaced with other Size 7 weapons.

Does the Ares Inferno have limited ammunition?

Yes. The SF7B is a ballistic weapon, so its main-gun ammunition is finite. Inferno pilots need to manage ammunition carefully and avoid wasting extended bursts on poor targets.

How many missiles does the Ares Inferno carry?

Current reference data lists the Ares Inferno with three missile racks capable of carrying a total of twenty Size 3 missiles.

Can the Ares Inferno be used solo?

Yes. The Ares Inferno is a single-seat fighter designed for one pilot. The pilot controls flight, the Gatling gun, missiles, and defensive systems without requiring additional crew.

Does the Ares Inferno have cargo space?

The Ares Inferno does not have a dedicated cargo grid for normal hauling gameplay. Current references do list external equipment storage and weapon-rack access, but the ship should not be treated as a cargo hauler.

Does the Ares Inferno have an interior?

No. The Ares is a single-seat fighter without a normal walkable interior, bed, living area, or cargo compartment.

Does the Ares Inferno have more armor than the Ares Ion?

Yes. Official Ares Q&A describes the Inferno as having thicker and more effective armor than the Ion. This supports the Inferno's more aggressive sustained-fire combat profile.

Is the Ares Inferno better than the Ares Ion?

The Inferno is better for players who want sustained ballistic Gatling fire and heavier armor. The Ion is better for players who prefer heavy energy shots and do not want to manage finite main-gun ammunition. Neither is universally better because the two variants are designed around different weapon styles.

Choose the Ares Inferno if you want a bespoke Size 7 ballistic Gatling, sustained fire, thicker armor, and a more aggressive ballistic combat style. Choose the Ares Ion if you want a Size 7 laser cannon, energy-weapon gameplay, and no ballistic ammunition requirement for the main gun. The Inferno is the ballistic specialist, while the Ion is the energy specialist.

Is the Ares Inferno good against capital ships?

The Ares Inferno is specifically designed to support attacks against capital-class and other large spacecraft. Its Size 7 ballistic Gatling is most effective when it can maintain sustained fire on a large target. It should still be treated as part of a wider combat force rather than a guaranteed solo capital-ship killer.

Is the Ares Inferno good for dogfighting?

The Inferno can attack smaller fighters, but conventional dogfighting is not its primary strength. Its heavy weapon, ammunition requirements, and anti-large-ship design make it more comfortable against targets that are easier to keep under sustained fire.

Is the Ares Inferno good for bounty hunting?

The Inferno can be very effective for bounty hunting when missions involve larger and more durable targets. Its sustained Size 7 ballistic fire becomes increasingly useful as target size increases. Against groups dominated by light fighters, more conventional fighters may be easier and more ammunition-efficient.

Does the Ares Inferno have good long-term value?

The Ares Inferno has useful long-term value for players who specifically want a single-seat ballistic anti-large-ship fighter. Its fundamental identity is clear: one pilot, one bespoke Size 7 ballistic Gatling, missile support, reinforced armor, and a focus on larger targets. Exact combat performance may change with balance updates, but its specialist role remains easy to understand.
